Ideal Weights for Real People

NOTE: This page is provided for information only. The "ideal" weight in the following charts is an approximation. Most people's ideal weight is about 10% higher. When your clothes fit well and you feel good, you have have probably reached your ideal weight. This is the weight that you will be able to maintain.

Follow these three easy steps to find your ideal weight:

  1. Take measurements for your frame size
  2. Determine your frame size using this simple chart
  3. Look up your ideal weight on the Men's or Women's Ideal Weight Chart


How to Approximate Your Frame Size


Bend forearm upward at a 90ª angle. Keep fingers straight and turn the inside of your wrist toward your body.

Place thumb and index finger of other hand on the two prominent bones on either side of the elbow.

Measure the space between your fingers on a ruler. (A physician would use a caliper.) Go to Step 2.

Compare with tables above listing elbow measurements for medium-framed men and women. Measurements lower than those listed indicate a small frame. Higher measurements indicate a larger frame.
